OpenAthens is an authentication service for library resources. It enables secure and reliable access both on and off campus using your ULS credentials. Beginning on July 1, 2025, all students, faculty, alumni, and staff, must access licensed digital resources through the OpenAthens authentication system.
Signing into OpenAthens
Once you login to one resource, you will not need to login again to access other resources through OpenAthens. However, if you change browser or device you will be prompted to login again.
Each vendor site will be slightly different. If there is a statement such as "Access provided by United Lutheran Seminary" then you are already connected. Otherwise:
Look for a login link. The link might be labeled as Institutional Login, Library Login, or OpenAthens.
Select Institutional Login to access the list of institutions.
Search for 'United Lutheran Seminary" in the list.
You will then be prompted for your ULS credentials. These credentials are exactly the same as those for your ULS email account. Your username is your full email address. Your password is your ULS email password. Multifactor authentication will be required, and it will be the same as that created for your ULS email account.
Confirm you are connected by looking for a statement such as "Access provided by United Lutheran Seminary."
On some vendor sites (for example, JSTOR) you can login directly via OpenAthens.
If you have difficulty signing in, please contact the library at library@uls.edu.
