Public Access

During the library's regular operating hours, members of the community are welcome to come and research in our collections for free. To check out materials, you'll need a library card, which has a $50 fee for anyone who is not an alum of the seminary. If you think you'll need access to materials that are in closed storage or have an archives-related research purpose, please email us at least a week in advance to ensure we'll be able to assist you.

Study Spaces

The Wentz Library has multiple study locations throughout. Students can also request the use of a storage cubby if they are studying frequently in the library and need a place to keep checked out materials for easy reference. In the lower level is the Luther Room, available for group study, as well as multiple study carrels spread out around the lower level. Additionally, the Library Living Room is on the first floor near the periodicals collection for informal discussion.

A.R. Wentz Branch Library Information

The Library

The A.R. Wentz Branch of the United Lutheran Seminary Library traces its roots to the very formation of Lutheran theological education in the United States. Benjamin Kurtz, of the Evangelical Lutheran General Synod, solicited contributions of money and books for its new seminary in Gettysburg, PA. The library still possesses those first donations.

Originally located in the seminary's main classroom and administrative buildings, the current library structure was built in 1947.

Today, the Wentz branch houses a collection of over 128,021 titles with over 180,000 items of books, periodical volumes, and A/V material available for use.

Archives

The Gettysburg Seminary Archives, and the Archives of Region 8 of the ELCA are a part of the Wentz Branch Collection.

The land on which United Lutheran Seminary sits, and which stretches between its two campuses, is tribal land, inhabited originally by the Lenni Lenape, the Susquehannock, and the Seneca tribes. We honor those original caretakers of this land, and we pay respect to the original inhabitants of what we now call Pennsylvania. Acknowledging this history is consistent with the seminary’s commitment to welcome and equity, which calls us in Christ to repentance, reconciliation, and wholeness. Even though the sad history of colonization cannot be undone, this land acknowledgement is one small way for us to remember what happened here, to understand our part in this story, and to develop a more healthy relationship with the land and its original inhabitants.
